Karnali Chisapani Hydropower Project, Nepal
Karnali Chisapani river. |
It is clear that the Karnali Chisapani Hydro-power will be the fourth largest in the world when completed. Nepal's current hydro-power production is 1600 MW. And the total installed capacity of Karnali Chisapani alone would be a staggering 10,800 MW! While the rivers of Nepal are being sold, this project is of huge interest to all the Nepalese people. The income from this project in a year would be equivalent to Richard Branson's net worth i.e. about five kharbas in rupees, which is also equal to the total estimated cost of the giant hydro-power project. It is expected to be completed by the year 2083 BS. It is also the year when the world will have started to take oil crisis very seriously. Thanks to the outstanding water resources of Nepal.
Meanwhile, the threats of deglaciation and climate change also do exist. Yet, that should not stop us!
The project is multipurpose and targets to irrigate 2 lakhs hectors in Nepal and around 32 lakhs hectors in brother India. Investors from all over SAARC are attracted for this project.
Navigation, flood control, tourism and fish farming are other potential benefits that we can take. Even if we cannot go for Nuclear power right now, these sorts of projects are promising to both the economy and pride on the Nation.
Very informative with interesting facts.
